I've been reading nothing but personal development books for a decade. I've now decided that I'm good. I've learned the things. I can now teach the things actually lol. So a few days ago I decided to read for the love of books again like I did as a YA and teen. Sooooo I went all in and ordered four books from Folio, 9 of the WoT series, and the Joe Abercrombie series so far. Time to give the Kindle a rest for a bit and enjoy some of these sweet page turners.

My life motto is always buy the book. I can scrimp and save on other things if I need to save for something big, but I can't justify not getting books.

I read the Hobbit for the first time when I was 10 years old and I loved it. I then read the first Lord of the rings book and wasn’t that impressed. I never read the other two lotr books. But recently I started reading the Hobbit again and then I read the rest of the series. And I gotta say that I loved it so much. It’s so much better than I remembered. Maybe it is because I’m older now 😂

She speaks the truth, Hyperion is the best book ever, not just scifi and this is coming from a big Isacc Asimov and Frank Herbert fan

I started reading this book after finishing "A Fire Upon the Deep" by Vernor Vinge. "Hyperion" really needed a map of the planet in the book. It was such an excellent book that as soon as I finished the last page, instead of moving on to the sequel, I started again from the first page.

I think if you are a fantasy fan, you do need to read it. Best world building ever. Obviously the sheer size of the series helps with that. I have read other Brandon Sanderson books, and I don't think he can write anything to touch The Wheel of Time. Robert Jordan is a much superior writer in my mind. However, Sanderson did do a good job with the last three books. He seemed to lean into the things Jordan did that was pleasing and leaned away from the things Jordan did that were annoying.

I just finished the series and agree. Sadly, many fans online just can’t see the misogyny and then truly think RJ was a pioneer despite like you said other series having strong female characters. People even try to compare nudity between men and women and argue there were less sexualized content from women (??). I found out his wife, editor Harrier was not fond of Rand’s polyamory- I had hoped the women would at least get multiple partners but nope.

Lost me in the cut in when you mentioned you left out Itkovian. One of the best characters in the genre. Was looking forward to your take on this character. Couldn't finish the video....

Fairly new to Sci Fi Horror but after reading The Last Astronaut by David Wellington I immediately wanted more from him. I then discovered Paradise 1 being the beginning of a new trilogy, and I was HOOKED. The characters, the setting, the creepy horror elements and fresh take on an “outbreak” scenario is brilliant. Already so excited for the second instalment and highly recommend to anyone!

Great review. Thanks! This book totally assassinated Gawyn's character. Regardless of his idiocy towards Rand, he continued to follow the Aes Sedai even after they tortured Min. Then he has the audacity to ask Min to leave with him and threaten Rand? Total d-bag. He should have died in that battle. Plot armor saved him. Virtually every relationship in this series is bad, but Egwene's sudden love for Gawyn is among the most ludicrous. They were together literally for 2 pages and we were 4000 pages into the series at that point. Is anyone smart enough to ask why Rand would kill Morgase? Why would Rahvin even? Morgase is obviously still alive. We agree on most everything but not on Min/Rand. Her reunion with him was one of the best scenes in the book. It is SO refreshing to see a man and a woman actually act like they are glad to see each other. Rarely happens in this series. Her attempt to get Rand to see her as more than a friend in the build-up to the kidnapping is one of my favorite parts in the entire series. She is the best female character in the series, and Rand totally needs a woman who doesn't channel. Their relationship is one of the few good ones in the series. Aviendha was all passion and Elayne was insta-love. Min was a true friend first. Egwene is too perfect. She always does the right thing. Should have chosen Galad. Her as an 18 year old Amyrlin is a lot to stomach. There are Aes Sedai that are over a hundred years old, and they are following a teenager? Come on. Somewhat slow book with a fantastic ending.

I’m about 70% through book 1 and honestly I find it to be a slog. I’ll finish this first book but unless it picks up significantly I don’t plan to continue the series.

Been a while since I tuned in but just wanted to drop a comment saying thank you for your past Booktube recommendations like Dreamer's Pool by Juliet Marillier. Now I'm probably gonna re-read Tolkien or Narnia or continue epic fantasies like Malazan - don't think Winds of Winter is being announced anytime soon by George R.R. Martin. Comics are also pretty interesting with image titles like Transformers and Void Rivals along with main Marvel / DC titles.

This book is highly overrated. Was it neat seeing canterbury; sci-fi edition? Sure, until the second tale starts the downward trajectory of the rest. I physically cringed when super soldier man lay with Barbarella Button. Just dated, hack writing firmly entrenched the time it was written.

The Dragonlance books tended to be shorter than later epic fantasy, but the entire shared universe of Dragonlance had around 200 or so books. I do think traditional epic fantasy is due to make a comeback. There has been a tendency to split large books into smaller volumes, so sometimes epic fantasy is out there, just not packaged like Wheel of Time.

It took me two months to finish this book. I was not totally in loved this book, I felt like it dragged. I wanted to love it and push through it to see if it got better. I think the last few chapters was the best part. I really wanted to love it like everyone else 😢

Jordan's repetitions are legendary. His wife was the editor so he did what he wanted to. I respect an author writing what he or she wants to, but the author should always strive to get better. It's a legendary series, but also a slog to read through.

No, I've never done a ban. I tend to read books as soon as I buy them, but I usually only buy one at a time. Occasionally, I might have a spurt of 2 or 3 books at the same time.

Good summary! I also need to know what the Typhoon Struggle is. The pacing of this book is awesome, feels very modern. And all of the threads being concluded in the end was amazingly well done.

I started reading this series and made it as far as book 3 (Memories of Ice) before dropping it. I give it credit for its uniqueness and scope, but the violence is just ludicrous. It makes ASOIAF seem like a fairytale. It has some of the least likable characters I've ever read, and I'd say I had no clue what was going on through about 75% of the first book and about 40% of the second book. There are two characters and an entire plot thread in the second book where I still don't know what their purpose was. I had heard the second book was rough but to just get through it to the third, but unfortunately I found the third book possibly worse. I'm a huge fantasy guy and this series came highly recommended so immense disappointment for me. Yes, Erickson is a brilliant writer as far as turn of phrase and use of language goes, but I've long since learned that great writing does not mean a great story. For me, once you start crucifying children, I have to give your series a hard pass.

Just landed on your channel. I was looking for some standalones. I just started my journey in the fantasy genre and I started with the Mistborn trilogy. Got already hooked and 128 pages in... I've heard that warbreaker should be read right after reading the way of kings. So, I'm gonna hold that one for later. Priory of the orange tree has piqued my interest. I just listen to this book (twice) and I loved it so much for the same reasons you mentioned. I really liked the sex scenes tbh. I think they are realistic and just part of what the characters felt and needed. I have read and listened to so many negative reviews of the book. It seems that many readers reduce the book to the romance part (well… I guess there IS a lot of romance). Anyway, looking for recommendations. This was exactly the book I like to read!

I'm on chapter 16. It's a decent book so far but I don't like how slow it is. It takes forever to get to the point. I think the author just wants us to get to know the other characters first.
